Housewarming parties and moving-in registries

You’ve just moved in, half the boxes are still unopened, and friends are already asking what to bring to the housewarming.

The essentials first, the extras after.

The housewarming often comes too soon: you’ve only just moved in, you don’t yet know exactly what’s missing, and friends are asking what to bring regardless. A list built up over time, rather than the night before the party, settles most of the uncertainty.

What’s genuinely missing after a move

The first few weeks reveal the gaps: some storage piece you can never find, a light fitting never replaced, a plant for the empty room. Noting these gaps as they come up, rather than trying to plan for everything before moving in, gives a more accurate list.

The extras you wouldn’t buy for yourself

A decorative piece, a good bottle of wine, a nice candle: the housewarming is one of the rare occasions where a little luxury is welcome, precisely because no one expects a strictly practical gift.

Avoiding duplicates of small items

Tea towels and candles are the classic housewarming duplicates. A list shared before the party avoids ending up with six identical candles, a problem much like a poorly prepared baby registry.

Do you really need a registry for a housewarming?

Plenty of housewarmings go perfectly well without a registry, with everyone bringing drinks or food. The list becomes useful mainly when the flat is still sparsely furnished and guests are after a real lead rather than one more bottle.

Common questions

When should you share the list relative to the party date?

Two to three weeks beforehand is plenty: early enough for guests to sort themselves out, late enough for the list to reflect what’s genuinely missing once the boxes are unpacked.

Should you include large appliances?

Only if several loved ones want to club together for a joint purchase. Otherwise, it’s better to keep the list to items a single guest can give without a disproportionate budget.

Does a housewarming registry make sense if you already have everything?

Not really: in that case, it’s better to let guests come empty-handed or with something to share over the meal, rather than inventing artificial wants.
